Family day at Seabreeze

Today, we spent the day at Seabreeze! The amusement park here in Rochester, with plenty of water rides, and kid activities. It was kind of a "family-we-haven't-done-anything-all-summer", mixed with "it's-almost-Karter's-birthday-and-we-don't-need-anymore-toys" deal. Seriously, we don't need anymore toys in this house, it's about to explode!

Jon and Kourtney went with us, and we had a blast! The boys are both big enough to do many of the rides, and actually enjoy the water slides. At Legoland in Florida, Karter was too short for a lot of the rides. He apparently grew and inch or two in the last 2 months, as he is now 36 inches (okay, half an inch might be the spiky hair) and meets the minimum limits for the rides. He was only bummed about missing two-the big bumper cars (which was happily replaced by the kiddie thunderbird track) and the kid's rollercoaster.

Kian went on the big swings, and Karter was happy to go on the kid's swings. They both enjoyed airplane rides, water slides, wave pool, train rides, and much more. It was so much fun now that Kian was big enough for almost all the adult rides too. He was so thrilled. Seeing their happy, grinning faces, was awesome. Pure joy, as they got on and off the rides, shooting water guns, enjoying junk food, courtesy of Aunt NeeNee, and all that amusement park stuff. You could just see the memories being made and banked.

Having the 2 other adults with us was great as well. Kevin and Jon could do the crazier rides if they wanted-or Kourt and Jon. There was always a person to go with a child who needed an adult rider, or take the smaller one to the kiddie rides. Or extra hands and eyes for bathrooms and running through the park. And, we picked a great day. A mid-week, cooler, but dry, day meant less people, cheaper tickets and coupons (thanks NeeNee for birthday contributions to the tickets!) and much shorter lines, without sweating all day long.

It ended with the boys coming home, eating a salad and going to bed. Perfect! It was a great success. Kian already asked that next year, this be his birthday gift as well.

Oh-and Kourtney got me to go on the Jack Rabbit....once. No, I didn't open my eyes.

Atlantic City Trip

So....the trip was interesting. Atlantic City is a nice place...for adults. Luckily, the time we went was the off season and it was pretty calm and relaxed. There isn't a lot for kids to do, but the beach and the aquarium were good, and since we were only there for 2.5 days, it was just right.

We left around 5:30 am on Thursday, dropping Finn off at my sister's on the way. The boys were up til late the night before, they were so excited, which actually was okay. This meant that Karter zonked right out again, and Kian fell back to sleep after an hour. Both slept the majority of the trip, with just one rest stop. Although, we did have to pull off by a toll booth and clean Kian up, as he threw up all over himself. Fun! He's never done that before. But, sausage biscuit from McDonald's at 6am with a ton of water and barely any sleep while driving over Pennsylvania hills will do that to you I guess. After that, it was smooth sailing.

It took almost 6.5 hours including the 2 short stops, which wasn't bad. WE got there around 12:30. We pulled up and there was valet parking (same price for what you had to pay to park at the hotel anyways, so why not?) the bell hop loaded our bags and suitcases on a cart and they brought it up to the room while we checked in. Any time we went some where I just showed my ticket to the cashier at the front door and the valet brought the car around. Ahh yes. That combined with the housekeepers who snuck in while we were out and made the bed, cleaned the bathrooms, brought clean towels and vacuumed? Priceless.

The hotel? Oh man. The Tropicana. Definitely an adult hotel. Not racy or anything, but it was massive--like it's 5 square city blocks. Seriously, crazy. There's a mall INSIDE it. Several dozen restaurants and several dozen shops and stores, 2 floors of casinos, 4 towers of hotel rooms. The problem? Our room was in the tower farthest away from the beach and entrance to the hotel. It literally took us about 12 minutes to leave the room, go down the elevator in our tower, through "the Quarter" (the Cuban 'district' in the hotel itself) take the escalator down through the shops, walk through the casino, take the escalator down to the main floor and walk across to the outside door. Sheesh. Thank God for the Boba carrier! I did this by myself a few times as Kevin was in his trainings and conferences. I did end up going to Target and snagging an umbrella stroller since we had left ours at my mom's a few weeks ago. That way I could keep Kian contained and not wandering into the slot machines as well, or if someone got tired...

Thursday we hung out on the beach and walked up the boardwalk to the pier (one of them) and then had dinner at the Rainforest Cafe, Kian's pick. It was a good place to take kids for sure. It thundered, lightninged, was loud, had monkeys and gorillas and parrots and elephants moving and making noise every 10 minutes. That definitely drowns out any toddler yelling and preschool protesting. After a detour in the room, we went back to the beach and boardwalk, bought some cheap sand toys and enjoyed the setting sun. We were beat by then and all crashed fairly early. Karter, as I figured, had some difficulties staying asleep. He slept with Kian in the bed and woke a couple times whining/crying but not completely awake. I just had to reach over or come and pat him and he was back out pretty fast.

He was still tired on Friday morning, that after I got them all ready and Kian was watching a cartoon, he fell back to sleep on my lap. We hung out in the hotel room for a bit and then went to check out the town and Target. Oh yeah, that was happy 30th birthday to me. That monthly friend, Kevin leaving early for training and crabby kids...nice way to wake up. Hmm.. Kevin then got out early from the training and we met him for some lunch and more beach play and boardwalk-ing. It was in the upper 60s but the sun was shining and it was beautiful. The ocean air was good for our hair, since the boys and I sported some curly do's, Karter especially. Here...it gets a bit hairy...Karter zonked out in the stroller, Kian and I wanted seafood for dinner and were headed up to the Pier for a seafood restaurant. But, Kevin's team member/friend/coworker and his family wanted to do dinner with us...so...I gave up my decision of birthday dinner to meet them...back at the Rainforest Cafe. Um, hello, did that last night, ugh. So...I am owed a dinner of my choosing, thank you very much!

Saturday morning we all woke up early and packed up and checked out. Kevin went to training, I took the boys to breakfast and then the aquarium. This was the hit. I was expecting this huge, state of the art aquarium. Um, no. I turned on the road, didn't see anything, turned into the parking lot (gravel) by the sign and saw a small octagonal building, with brown wood shingles. Um, huh? Well, we had nothing else to do. The kids were free (yay) so I only had to pay for myself. It was small: 2 small stories, with only 5 small tanks on the first floor and the second floor had some reptiles and amphibians (aka snakes and frogs and lizards). But, the coolest part was the touch tanks! The boys got to walk up to this low, long tank and touch dogfish sharks--don't worry not dangerous, and sea urchins and star fish. We watched a diver go in the biggest tank and feed the fish. Then we went upstairs to see some other things and, in my opinion and Kian's too, the best part ever--baby sting rays! There was a tank with various rays, all small baby ones. Some were just bigger than my hand and some were about 2 feet wide/long. For $2 you could buy a cup of fish to feed them. Keivn and I touched sting rays in VA beach on our honeymoon--very cool, they feel smooth, slippery but not slimy, almost like wet velvet. These things are awesome, they're like puppies! They come right up and want to be petted and fed and are so friendly. Kian spent probably 45 mins of the hour and a half we were there at the ray tank. Karter did not enjoy it and wanted no part of touching them.

Luckily for us, Kevin decided to cut out early and wanted to head for home. It was looking like rain and with no hotel room to go to, the boys and I would be pretty crabby in the car wandering around for things to do. We grabbed some lunch and headed off. Buhbye....that was all. It was a nice little mini vacation to get out of the house and see some new stuff, but not exactly relaxing. The driving 6+ hours for just being there 2-2.5 days was not so thrilling. The boys were great in the car, slept or talked or looked at books and listened to music. Neither fell asleep on the way home like I thought they would. The closer we got to home, the wider awake they became and more excited they got. Interesting. Would I go there again? Eh, if I somehow got a windfall to spend at a casino-land. But, that's not really for me. You can sit on a beach closer to home, too. But, I am more determined to go back to Boston and now I need to make a trip to Philly!

I'll get some pictures up soon...

A Look Back At 2008

Have a seat as I walk you through 2008 briefly...

January: Not much to report this month, as we barely made it up to see the ball drop. I was still blissfully home daily with Kian and cooking up a storm.

February: Kian started crawling. Things got interesting around the house. More cleaning and more safety measures ensue. We host a small Superbowl party and Kenny's birthday dinner back to back.

March: I get the wake up call that I need to go back to work. My former co-workers and boss beg me to come back. I agree. We start the daycare search, with dread.

April: I start back to work on the 7th to what is supposedly half-day week, but is not. Kian goes to daycare for the first time and survives.

May: We prime and paint white over the wood walls in our family room and paint the rest of the room gray. It takes a full week. I plant a garden, smaller than years before, but still good. Kian loves outdoors. I celebrate my first official Mother's Day and birthday all in one by making a big brunch at my house for my mom. Hmm...

June: We take Kian to Seabreeze for my employee picnic on his birthday, with Jon of course. We celebrate Kian's 1st birthday with immediate family and friends. He hasn't got this walking thing down yet, but can sign and say a few words. Kian's first cousin Grant is born to Paul & Elissa. We celebrate Kevin's first Father's Day, by going to the campground for fishing and a picnic.

July: Kian loves the fireworks displays we take him to. We go camping with Patrick and Savannah at Gravel Ponds. Kian can make several animal sounds and has quite a few words.

August: Kian starts walking (finally!) more cleaning up after the child and more safety measures installed. We go camping at Alleghany State Park with my family and enjoy our short vacation. Courtesy of Jon we get to take Kian to the zoo for the first time. He loves seeing all the animals, and we're thrilled with our membership.

September: Our busiest month: We have enough of Kian's daycare and make the switch to Pearce 4 Kids, Kian adjusts well and loves it. My mother-in-law begins watching Kian on Mondays, great for our checking account! Kevin celebrates his 28th birthday. Kevin and I celebrate our 5th anniversary by taking a trip to Toronto and watching the Yankees lose horribly. We stay in China town and laugh at the silly signs while Kian stays home with Aunt NeeNee, the first time alone overnight without us! Kian falls backwards on the driveway and requires a Saturday visit to the pediatrician to clean out the cut on the back of his head and make sure it doesn't require stitches-it doesn't. This walking thing takes a toll on all of us! We also attend the Roberts Wesleyan reunion and parade-nice to see those friends from 5 years ago-5 years already?! The pediatrician doesn't believe me that my child has at least 40+ words. hehe.

October: Kian runs into a corner at daycare and requires an after-hours doctor visit to glue his deep gash together on his forehead. We begin to understand that having a little boy means lots of blood, bruises, and dirt. We stock up our first aid kit. Kian is a scarecrow (homemade) for Halloween. We hide from the trick-or-treaters by going to Wegmans and watching movies in the dark afterwards.

November: Kian votes-so he thinks (and still has the sticker on his car seat to prove it). Kian begins talking in 2 word sentences. We enjoy our two Thanksgivings, start Christmas shopping and November flies by. Jon secures our Strong Museum membership for the year-woo hoo!

December: Kian loves Christmas this year and gets 4 of them! Winter weather finally (?) hits NY and we get dumped on a few times. I have to drive through a blizzard for 2 hours to get home. We take Kian to the Museum and he can't get enough, luckily we get to go again and again... We ring in the New Year with a few friends, quietly.

And then... I'll tell The Rest of the Story! Just like Paul Harvey...

Trip to the museum

I realize I am in the odds of bloggers all blogging about their hopes for 2009 and things of 2008, after all it is New Year's Eve. But, maybe tomorrow I shall get there. For today you get to see lots of (bad) pictures of Strong National Museum of Play. Every time I type that I get the song stuck in my head!

I know that I only have a point & shoot digital camera, but it is really hard to take pictures in the museum! Some places are dark, some are very bright, and the dark ones don't take to the flash well, as it only lights up what is immediately in front of you, thus leaving dark spots all around. Someday I'll have a great camera and none of that will matter.

But, there will always be 4000 people clamoring about and lots of action, so it will still be hard to take a picture. Kids were always sticking their body parts in my view, or strollers got left there, and kids would not sit still enough for me to snap away. Oh well, it was so much fun. Kian completely enjoyed himself and was so worn out by the end of the day. We spent almost 5 and a half hours there, and we still didn't get through everything. Good thing we have a wonderful membership, courtesy of Jon, so we can go every month! Or more...

I didn't realize pictures were being taken as we were in the silly mirrors:

Kian pointing to Bert, he love, love, loved Sesame Street area!

Welcome to Sesame Street

I love this picture because it looks like Kiara is holding Kian in one hand. They were helping him climb the rock wall.

One of the 3 or 4 toddler only areas, that were great-I didn't have to worry about him being plowed over by some big kids, and it was all foam.

Another toddler area, foam blocks and all

Because we don't have a million books to read at home, you must read them at the museum!

Kian loved this, although he was too little for it yet. You assembled cars as they moved down the conveyor belt. Several big kids (brats!) knocked him over numerous times. (I especially loved how these parents watched it happen and didn't blink or say anything!)

This turned out nice-of me =)

Here's Kiara attempting the Hula Hoops:

Playing old school Atari

This was one of my favorite areas: The Berenstein Bears Village. It was in the back and less crowded and very hands-on for both Kian and Kenny & Kiara. He kept trying to pick up the frog and saying "stuck, stuck".

He was supposed to be selling the apples at the stand, but kept trying to eat them instead.

We had a blast, there was so much to do. Although, I should have listened to Jon when he said "don't come during a school break". There weer more kids, parents and pregnant women than I have ever seen! You could barely move. This did make for a very loud and overstimulating environment. I'll be sure to come some afternoon during the week next time. I'm excited for the Mr. Potato Head exhibit next month. Kian didn't care for the Curious George monkey walking around. He kept saying "bye bye monkey, bye bye". And we only had a minor meltdown when we wouldn't let Kian keep pushing the Atari restart buttons. Overall, a terrific day!

Toronto Trip Pics-phase IV

After leaving Toronto we headed to Niagara Falls. On the way over the river we saw this monstrosity, it appeared to be some kind of coal-burning, energy...thing? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Kevin drove. I? I got hungry, so I ate some trail mix. then, I got bored. So...I did this:

Mouse

Funky face

Bunny? Reindeer? Then this happened:

And this is how I looked after that happened:

This is me annoying Kevin while driving:

So, then I created a few more things-Christmas tree

Duck, swan, goose?

Driving over the falls:
(I always am afraid those people are going to all walk/jump/fall off that lookout! Like lemmings, oop over they go. It is tilting a bit, see? Okay back to the more normal un-normalcy.)

Then we stopped at Seneca Niagara Casino:

We played poker for a bit, I lost, Kevin kept playing. So, I decided to take a walk down to the falls. This is the street up to the casino "Old Falls Road".

Ahh, peace.

This feisty little guy wanted to fight me. I said no, thanks and kept walking. But, only after naming him Adrian.

For some reason I accidentally made these picture small.

Finally, this is more of me entertaining myself in the car on the ride home:

Last, but not least, Jessica's favorite face, she's terrified of it: THE PLATYPUS

This (finally) concludes my Toronto pictures. I know you are all ever so glad! Until next time..

Toronto Trip Pics-phase III

Toronto at night.
Now, I only brought my little digital camera. I would have liked to bring the Nikon, but didn't want to look that touristy. So, these pictures aren't that great. But it was cool to see the city at night, after the game. We walked to the stadium and back, about a mile each way. Good exercise too right?

So here's the CN tower, it changed colors every so many seconds.

I tried using regular shoot and then the night portrait setting. Apparently, while using the night portrait setting you must be stiller than roadkill to get a good shot. I, obviously breathed during this shot of the stadium.

City lights.

I think this was without the night portrait setting, just on 'auto'. It came out better.

And Kevin, enjoying our king size bed!

The next morning we took a walk to Eaton Centre. But, first, just outside our hotel was this, yep, right in the heart of Chinatown:

So many signs!

Leaving Toronto, on the side of the highway, there were at least 6 of these "signs". I'm not sure what to call them. They were well-manicured, landscaped "garden advertising". The white area was small rocks, formed with landscape edging, then the rest filled in with green plants and grass.

I know you're all waiting with baited breath for my next installment... coming up we have our stop in Niagara Falls, at the Seneca Niagara Casino, and "what happens when Krysten is bored in the car". Excited aren't you?

Toronto Trip Pics-phase II

So, the stadium was great, the people were great, the game...not so much. The first 2 or 3 innings went by so fast. We got our food on the way to our seats and before we finished the nachos and (nasty, rubbery) hot dogs, the first few innings were over.

This picture of Giambi made me laugh. Why wouldn't you take a nicer picture, knowing it would be broadcast on every TV, every jumbo-tran, the entire season? Oh, Giambi!

Here's Giambi batting...

And...striking out

Here's Betemit. He actually got a hit and made it on base.

I haven't got this "take your own picture" thing down just yet.

Here's Kevin's review of the game:

Yep. They lost. Bad.
